Philadelphia bulk trash rules: what the City takes

Philadelphia offers a few free ways to get rid of big items, but each has rules. Here's a quick summary based on the City's published sanitation rules. Rules can change, so check phila.gov or call 311 before you put anything out.

Mattresses and box springs

The City collects mattresses and box springs with regular trash, up to two items per week, but they must be sealed in plastic mattress bags. Bagging isn't required if you drop them off at a sanitation convenience center yourself.

Appliances and other bulk items

Large items like stoves, washing machines, and air conditioners are not accepted with regular curbside trash. According to the City, your options are to use a private hauler, take up to two items to a sanitation convenience center, or use the bulk collection program.

The bulk collection program

When the City announced its residential bulk collection program, it described these rules:

  • Free, booked online at bulkcollection.phila.gov or by calling 311.
  • Up to four items per appointment, first come, first served.
  • Only single-family homes and buildings with up to six units are eligible. Larger apartment buildings, condos, and businesses must use a private hauler.
  • Items go out at your normal collection spot the night before, labeled with a pickup code.

Construction debris and tires

Construction debris isn't accepted curbside. The City says to take it to a private facility for a fee. You can bring up to four car tires to a sanitation convenience center.

When a private hauler makes more sense

  • You have more than a few items, or a whole room, basement, or house.
  • You can't carry items to the curb yourself.
  • You live in a larger apartment building, condo, or run a business.
  • You need it gone today, not on the next available appointment.
  • You have construction debris.
